What You Need to Know About Importing to Ship Internationally Safely?

How do Taxes Work?

When shipping internationally, shipments will be subject to the customs regulations of the destination country and charges for duties and taxes. These duties and taxes are calculated based on the type and value of the item being shipped.

Taxes in each country depend on the local VAT, as well as the type of item and its declared value. The rate and tax threshold is the amount above which a person begins to pay tax based on the declared value of an item.

The country of destination through the customs service calculates which means that import duties and taxes are calculated based on the value of the imported goods, as well as shipping costs.

When sending or receiving international shipments, the following should be taken into account:

1. Knowing the Tax Threshold

Depending on the destination country and in some cases if the total value of the items exceeds an amount in USD$ (U.S. dollars) the import taxes of the shipment will have a percentage tax to pay that can vary from 3% to 50% of the value of the purchase invoice.

For example, if the declared value of the items is USD$100, and if the non-tax value is below USD$50 and with total taxes of 10%, in order for the recipient to receive the package, an additional amount of USD$10 in taxes will need to be paid to the government of the destination country.

2. Doing Preliminary Paperwork

Customs duties will be another charge to take into account and vary according to the category of the product, depending on the type of product, or if they are restricted or prohibited products.

If they are restricted products, the documentation inherent to the product must be presented with a prior permit at the governmental entity of destination before or during the arrival of the product. If they are prohibited products, they must also have an import permit or license both at origin and destination and inform the shipping service about it.

3. Knowing Taxes Based on Item Category

Everything that is shipped is included in a specific and unified list of categories that have a different tax rate. You must choose the category that best describes the product in order to determine the amount of duty for the destination country by knowing the HS/HTS tariff classification.
